Upon graduation Miller joined the

for Soil Research in Aberdeen as a scientific officer. In 1970 he was appointed senior scientific officer and principal scientific officer in 1976. He specialised in researching forest bio-geochemistry. In 1981 he was awarded the Scientific Achievement Award by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations for his 'research in nutrient cycling through forest ecosystems, including processes in the growth response of trees and forest soils to fertilizers'. In 1984 Miller was appointed professor and head of the Department of Forestry at the University of Aberdeen. He was head of the Department of Forestry until 2000 and retired in 2004. Professor Miller was president of the
