The station opened on December 16, 1922, as . It was absorbed into the JR East network upon the privatization of the

(JNR) on April 1, 1987. A new station building was completed in April 1989, and rebuilt in January 1995. The station was renamed Hottoyuda Station on June 20, 1991.
