1985–1990: Early career

Gerland's career as manager began in 1985 as the assistant manager at VfL Bochum. In 1986 Gerland took over as manager from Rolf Schafstall at VfL Bochum. The tenure lasted from 1 July 1986 to 30 June 1988. Bochum finished in 11th place in the 1986–87 season. They were eliminated in the first round of the German Cup.
