FC Basel and advanced to their first team in 1961. Between the years 1961 and 1965 he played a total of 135 games for Basel scoring a total of 56 goals. 72 of these games were in the

In his second season he played 22 of the 26 league games scoring 16 times, thus was the team's league top scorer. In the final of the Swiss Cup on 15 April 1963, Blumer scored the first goal as Basel won the Cup with a 2–0 win.
In his third season Blumer played 23 domestic league games scoring five times. In the

Club chairman, Lucien Schmidlin, led the group, but as they arrived in the hotel in Bangkok, he realised that 250,000 Swiss Francs were missing. The suitcase that he had filled with the various currencies was not with them. He had left it at home, but fortunately Swiss Air were able to deliver this to him within just a few days. During the tour a total of ten friendly/test games were played, these are listed in
