The municipality is named after the old name for the area along the west shore of the Orkdalsfjorden. The name comes from the old ''Geita'' farm which is located at the

On 3 November 1917, a royal resolution changed the spelling of the name of the municipality to ''Gjeitestrand'', removing the definite form ending ''-en''. On 1 October 1921, the spelling of the name was changed to ''Geitastrand''.
