Frederick Katz (February 25, 1919 – September 7, 2013) was an American
cellist The violoncello ( , ), commonly abbreviated as cello ( ), is a middle pitched bowed (sometimes pizzicato, plucked and occasionally col legno, hit) string instrument of the violin family. Its four strings are usually intonation (music), tuned i ...
and composer. He was among the earliest jazz musicians to establish the cello as a viable improvising solo instrument. Katz has been described in '' CODA'' magazine as "the first real jazz cellist."


Biography

Born in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York City, Katz was classically trained and studied under
