Mac Conghail was a special adviser to the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism John O'Donoghue from 2002 to 2005. In 2005, he was appointed as Director of the Abbey Theatre. When Mac Conghail announced his 2016 programme, "Waking the Nation", for the centennial year of the 1916 Rising, a storm ensued. Only one of the ten plays on the programme was written by a woman and only three directed by women. This sparked a campaign called "Waking the Feminists" to demand gender equality in theatre. Mac Conghail acknowledged that he had "failed to check his privilege".
