. Her parents were Catherine (born Colvin) and Thomas Conway. Her father was clerk for the railways and then in a corn merchants. In 1904 she became the head of Tiber Street School which was a large experimental school for over a thousand children of all ages. She was a keen member of the National Union of Teachers and she became the President of the Liverpool branch in 1909. In 1918 she was elected President of the National Union of Teachers.
