Early years
Ackerman was born in
New York City on 17 June 1863, and moved with his parents to
Plainfield, very shortly afterwards. He was educated at public and private schools and graduated from
Plainfield High School in 1880. Employed in cement manufacturing, Ackerman was a member of the Plainfield common council in 1891 and 1892.

Ackerman was a member of the New Jersey Geological Survey and associate of the
American Society of Civil Engineers. He was elected as a Republican to the
Sixty-sixth and to the six succeeding Congresses. He served from March 4, 1919, until his death in Plainfield, New Jersey, on October 18, 1931; he was buried in the family plot in
Hillside Cemetery.
