The settlement was founded as a khutir in 1776 by Major Velychkivskyi who sold it next year to poruchik Revutskyi.

Until 18 July 2020, Dobrovelychkivka was the administrative center of
Dobrovelychkivka Raion. The raion was abolished in July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Kirovohrad Oblast to four. The area of Dobrovelychkivka Raion was merged into Novoukrainka Raion.
Until 26 January 2024, Dobrovelychkivka was designated
urban-type settlement
