Born in Hawaii, Krakauer grew up in southern Portugal and moved to London, England, for secondary school. He attended

, where he earned degrees in computer science and mathematics. He received his D.Phil. in evolutionary theory from

in 1995, where he stayed on as a postdoctoral research fellow.
