at the 1938 Empire Games, where he won the gold medal in the 100 yards contest in 9.7 seconds and in the 220 yards event in 21.2 seconds. He was also a member of the English relay team which won the silver medal in the 4×110 yards competition. Holmes became the national 220 yards champion after winning the British AAA Championships title at the 1939 AAA Championships.
