Etymology
The name ''Cutzamala'' comes from a

word ''cutzamallot'' meaning "rainbow"; hence, "Place of Rainbows.” It was known to
Purepecha speakers as "''Apatzingani'',” which has the same meaning. An alternative theory suggests it is derived from the Nahuatl word ''cutzamatl,'' meaning "weasel."
