The event was first held in 1983 as the Big Valley Jamboree, with

In 2005, promoter Troy Vollhoffer (who had previously worked as a stagehand for early editions of the event) took over the festival, and relaunched it with a return to country music as the Craven Country Jamboree. The Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose has continued to be held. On October 27, 2016, it was announced that the event had been rebranded as part of the Country Thunder series of festivals (which are run by Vollhoffer via his company Premier Global Productions), with organizers stating that the integration gave it more "buying power" in terms of attracting larger acts. In 2020 and 2021, the festival was cancelled due to the
