Taxonomy

''Clathria'' was first formally named in Eduard Oscar Schmidt's 1862 ''Die Spongien des adriatischen Meeres'' ("The sponges of the Adriatic Sea"). The type species is ''Clathria'' (''Clathria'') ''compressa''.
