Early life

Charles was born in

on 1 October 1894. On completing school, he began an apprenticeship in a shipping company. In 1911 he joined Karl Schneider as an apprentice decorative painter. In 1914 he attended the Basel trade school and became friends with Fritz Baumann, Paul Wilde and Jakob Mumenthaler, a brother of the architect Ernst Mumenthaler.


Work

Hindenlang belonged to the ''Gruppe Rot-Blau'' generation of artists. They are also known as Basel's classical generation of painters and achieved their breakthrough in 1907 at a joint exhibition at the
