McKenna was married to entrepreneur and writer Scott Gilmore, with whom she moved to The Glebe, Ottawa in 2002, until separating in 2019. Together, they have three children. In 2024, she married MASS LBP founder Peter MacLeod. McKenna still swims for fun. In 2015, she competed as part of the National Capital YMCA Masters Swim Team.
