The island is believed to be named after John Bootie, a midshipman on
HMS Endeavour
HMS ''Endeavour'' was a British Royal Navy research vessel that Lieutenant James Cook commanded to Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia on his First voyage of James Cook, first voyage of discovery from 1768 to 1771.
She was launched in 1764 as t ...
, who died at sea 4 February 1771 on the
first voyage of exploration by James Cook to the eastern coast of Australia.
