She resigned her position in September 2023 in order to run as the prospective Labour Party parliamentary candidate for Clwyd East, the area in North Wales she was born and brought up in, triggering a by-election.
The BBC described her as a "former accountant and civil servant". North Wales Live said Gittins "trained as an accountant and worked in finance and has also served as a councillor. Her job before election was as a trade union negotiator."
