The second baron had assumed the additional surname of Mostyn by royal licence in 1831, on the death of his mother's brother, the last of the Mostyn baronets. His eldest son and heir the Hon. Thomas Lloyd-Mostyn, who also represented Flintshire in Parliament, predeceased his father. Lord Mostyn was therefore succeeded by his grandson, the third Baron (the son of Thomas Lloyd-Mostyn).
