criteria. The conservation area, which extends significantly beyond Barley Cove bay and covers a 10 km stretch of coastline eastwards to Toormore Bay, was proposed as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) in 2002. It was designated as a Special Area of Conservation in 2018.
