Plot

Arthur's little sister D.W. wakes Arthur up early in the morning and takes him downstairs. She shows him pictures of Arthur before he had glasses in a photo album, stating that he was "a lost brother," and that "Mom and Dad must've sold him or something." He starts explaining that it was him. D.W. doesn't believe him, thinking he was born with glasses. He corrects her, saying that he was not born with glasses and starts telling her about the story of how he got his glasses.

How Arthur got his glasses

Arthur is not doing well in school due to the fact he can't see properly. For example, in class, he has to ask his classmate Francine for the numbers on the board. After a test, his teacher, Mr. Marco states that, "Anybody with four or more mistakes should see me after class for extra homework." Arthur gets this amount of mistakes, but it is unknown what Mr. Marco did. The next day, Arthur (and everyone else in the school) goes to the nurse's office for an eye test. Everyone before Arthur in line can read the letters on the eye chart that contain "E, G, B, D". When Arthur goes up, he doesn't know nor can see the letters. The nurse suggests that he sees an eye doctor. Arthur's parents take him to the eye doctor. She tries to show him a picture through a lens test. Arthur screams "It's a giant bug!" and his parents get scared. It is revealed that there is no giant bug, and that a caterpillar had crawled onto the lens. Arthur is told that he needs glasses. He goes to the optical store and looks at many of the glasses there. He decides to pick out a set of brown glasses with white, round lenses, being the ones he wears for the rest of the series. An exception is season 14 episode 9b, "Through the Looking Glasses", where he loses his glasses and has to get new ones. However, in the next episode, he wears his usual glasses. After going to school with his glasses for the first time. His friends tease him about it and nickname him "Four-Eyes", going as far as Buster putting two cups in his eyes and telling everyone he is Arthur. Frustrated about them, he decides to get rid of them. In his backyard, he uses a slingshot and slingshots them out of the yard. They bounce off of a telephone pole and into a window onto his bed. Arthur, in dismay, simply throws them outside of his window. They land in a pile of leaves his dad is raking, and eventually end up on the kitchen counter. Lastly, Arthur puts them on top of D.W.'s peg board so she can hammer them. His mom stops them in the act and Arthur tells her that "D.W. took them, Mom. I was just getting them back." Arthur decides to go to school without his glasses, and everyone wonders where they are. Buster asks him if he needs help going to the bathroom. He tells him no, and that he knows the school at the back of his head, with the boys' bathroom is the third door from the corner he is in. Before counting the doors, one of the doors swings open, causing him to forget to count that door. He accidentally walks into the girls' bathroom, as a result as all of the girls scream and run away as a result of Arthur being there. Arthur get embarrassed about this because most of the staff is looking at him after this event, including the principal. Arthur decides to wear his glasses again, and learns that glasses can help him see better from the help of the actor who plays his favorite superhero "Bionic Bunny", who wears the same glasses as him. When he tells his friends about the actor, they start treating Arthur better again, with Francine getting her own glasses. Arthur notices there are no lenses, and Francine tells Arthur that they are her movie star glasses and are meant for style, not vision. Arthur tells her that he has worn glasses ever since. Looking at another picture in the photo album, of their mom and dad as young adults, D.W. asks him who the man in the picture is and what he is doing with mom, as Arthur's dad has a beard and a fancy hairstyle in the picture, but doesn't have them anymore, looking like a completely different person. She asks if their mom got divorced, and claims to wake her up and demand an explanation. As she is walking upstairs, Arthur screams D.W.'s name multiple times, and after a few seconds, the screen fades to black and the episode ends.
