and covers the south-west region of the state. The diocesan cathedral is the Cathedral of Christ the King in Ballarat. Garry Weatherill, formerly the Bishop of Willochra between 2000 and 2011, was installed as the 10th Bishop of Ballarat on 5 November 2011.


History

The Diocese of Ballarat was created (in virtue of the power given by Act 18 Vic. No. 45) by an Act of the Church Assembly of the Diocese of Melbourne (then coextensive with Victoria), on 30 October 1873. The inaugural bishop Samuel Thornton was consecrated on 1 May 1875 by A. C. Tait, Archbishop of Canterbury, in Westminster Abbey. The Diocese began its active existence on the day of his enthronement at Ballarat in Christ Church Pro-Cathedral on 11 August 1875.
