, on 17 July 1959, as the eldest of ten children. She graduated from

with a degree in economics.

Oramas joined the Union of the Democratic Centre in 1978, and then the

(CC) in 1982. From 1979 to 1991, she was a member of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council. Oramas was elected as mayor of
