History

Aetingen is first mentioned in 1267 as ''Etinge''.


Geography

Before the merger, Aetingen had a total area of . Of this area, or 42.4% is used for agricultural purposes, while or 42.8% is forested. Of the rest of the land, or 14.1% is settled (buildings or roads), or 1.4% is either rivers or lakes.

Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests. Of the agricultural land, 28.6% is used for growing crops and 13.1% is pastures. All the water in the municipality is flowing water. The former municipality is located in the Bucheggberg district, in the Limpach valley along the southern flank of the Bucheggberg. It consists of the ''haufendorf'' village (an irregular, unplanned and quite closely packed village, built around a central square) of Aetingen and the settlement of Brittern.
