On 15 July 2013 Callaghan was relieved of his duties by the club's board of directors. On 13 October 2016, Callaghan returned to management in Northern Ireland, taking over at Carrick Rangers. Within a few months at the club, Callaghan saw his side through to their first ever League Cup Final.
