Chavez attended Monterey High School. During her junior year she averaged 37.8 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.5 steals per game. Following the season she was named Texas Gatorade Player of the Year. During her senior year she averaged 34.9 points, 9.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 3.7 steals and 1.2 blocks per game.
