A Viagem (1975)

''A Viagem'' (''The Voyage'') is a Brazilian telenovela produced by TV Globo. It is written by Ivani Ribeiro with the contribution of Solange Castro Neves, and directed by Wolf Maya, Ignácio Coqueiro and Andre Schultz. The telenovela aired from April 11, 1994, until October 22 of the same year and includes 167 episodes.

It's a remake of telenovela homonymous of 1975/1976, also written by Ivani Ribeiro. The twisted plot deals with the sorrows and hopes of ordinary people and their love or enmity with each other. Supernatural powers affect them until in the end peace and goodwill are restored. Its success increased book sales about Spiritism.

Synopsis

Alexandre Toledo carries out an assault, during which he kills a man who surprises him. He manages to flee the spot, but his brother Raul and his brother-in-law Teodoro (Téo) turn him in to the police. On the other hand, Alexandre's sister and Téo wife Diná tries to defend her brother. She seeks assistance with lawyer Otávio Jordão (some time later she falls in love with him), but he refuses to help her because the victim was a good friend of his. Subsequently, Alexandre is condemned to 18 years in prison. He commits suicide, prior to which he vows to retaliate those who helped to bring him thus far "in this life or another". As a ghost, he begins his revenge against Raul, Téo and Otávio. Alexandre influence Mrs. Guiomar, Raul mother-in-law who treats him like a son, transforming the lives of Raul and Andrezza in a hell. Tato, Otávio son stops studying and becomes a delinquent like Alexandre and Téo begins to suffer from outbursts that make him violent. Alexandre kills Otávio in a car accident, Diná gets desperate.

In another subplot, Téo younger than his wife and a womanizer, suffers with the jealousy of Diná. They separate and Téo becomes affected with Alexandre's former girlfriend Lisandra (Lisa), instead and marries her in the end.

Following Alexandre's suicide, Alberto Rezende, the doctor and friend of the family, offers his help to Alexandre's mother, Mrs. Maroca as well as all other the family members. In the beginning, Alberto is attracted by Diná, but later his affection turns towards Estela, Diná's elder sister. In the end, they get married. Alberto is the only person realizing that Alexandre's spirit is responsible for the mishaps. As a medium (adept of Allan Kardec's Spiritism doctrine), he tries to get Alexandre's doomed soul back on the path to heaven.

Estela, on her part, has troubles with her teenage daughter Beatriz (Bia). Beatrix's father, Ismael Novaes, left the family. He is a drug dealer and promoter of illegal gambling (by which be has become wealthy). After years of absence he reappears, exerting a bad influence on his daughter. Beatriz decides to leave her mother to live with her father instead. Bia starts a relationship with Otávio (Tato), Otávio's son. Bia finds out about her father's crimes and runs away from home.

Diná desperately tries to find Beatriz and bring her back to her mother. When she finally succeeds, she suddenly dies from a heart attack. In the sky, her spirit teams up with Otavio's to save Alexandre's soul. In the end of the soap opera, Alexander can no longer bear the tortures in hell and repents. He goes to heaven and reincarnate as a son of Téo e Lisa. Without Alexander's vengeful spirit, Tato be a good man again, Téo no more attacks of anger and Dona Guiomar leave your daughter's wedding alone, Raul and Andrezza have a son and are happy.

Development

''A Viagem'' is a remake of the telenovela of the same name written by Ivani Ribeiro and broadcast on Rede Tupi between 1975 and 1976. The story deals with life after death according to spiritist doctrine. To write it, Ribeiro based herself on the books ''E a Vida Continua...'' (1968) and ''Nosso Lar'' (1944), psychographed by the medium Chico Xavier.

The telenovela was initially to be broadcast in the 6 pm slot. However, in the 7 pm slot, the replacement for ''Olho no Olho'', which was to be ''Vira Lata'', faced production problems and was shelved by the broadcaster for future production, so ''A Viagem'' was reassigned to this slot. The delay in making this decision meant that director Wolf Maya started work on the telenovela twenty days before its premiere.

When writing the remake, Ivani Ribeiro was having trouble seeing due to complications from diabetes. Her collaborator Solange Castro Neves read the original script and wrote the adaptations discussed with her. ''A Viagem'' was the last soap opera written by Ribeiro, who died in 1995 at the age of 73 from kidney failure.

Casting

To play the protagonist Diná, Wolf Maya invited Regina Duarte, who had been away from telenovelas since ''Rainha da Sucata''. However, Duarte was unable to accept the role, and Christiane Torloni was invited soon after. At the time, the actress was living in Portugal and was persuaded to do the telenovela on the grounds that it was a comedy story, which was not exactly the case.

Cláudio Corrêa e Castro was the only actor to take part in both versions of the telenovela. In 1975, he played Daniel, the mentor of Nosso Lar, while in 1994 he appeared as Alexandre's defense lawyer.

''A Viagem'' was the first and only telenovela by actress and singer Chris Pitsch, who died prematurely in 1995 at the age of 24 from a heart attack.
