ATMP or aminotris(methylenephosphonic acid) is a
phosphonic acid with chemical formula N(CH
2PO
3H
2)
3. It is a colorless solid. Its conjugate bases, such as
2PO3H)3">(CH2PO3H)3sup>3-, have
chelating properties.
ATMP can be synthesized from the
Mannich-type reaction of ammonia, formaldehyde, and
phosphorous acid
Phosphorous acid (or phosphonic acid) is the Compound (chemistry), compound described by the chemical formula, formula . It is diprotic (readily ionizes two protons), not triprotic as might be suggested by its formula. Phosphorous acid is an in ...
, in a manner similar to the
Kabachnik–Fields reaction.
Properties
ATMP has good antiscale performance. It is related structurally to
nitrilotriacetic acid.
