One member of the unit described the diverse nature of the company by saying "it is composed of Yankees, Crackers, Conchs, Englishmen, Spaniards, Germans, Frenchmen, Italians, Poles, Irishmen, Swedes, Chinese, Portuguese, Brazilians...also Scotsmen, Welshmen, and some Half Indians."
