Zelkova
''Zelkova'' (from the Georgian language, Georgian ''dzelkva'', 'stone pillar') is a genus of six species of deciduous trees in the elm family Ulmaceae, native to southern Europe, and southwest and eastern Asia. They vary in size from shrubs (''Zelkova sicula, Z. sicula'') to large trees up to tall (''Zelkova carpinifolia, Z. carpinifolia''). The bark is smooth, dark brown. Unlike the elms, the branchlets are never corky or winged. The leaf, leaves are alternate, with serration, serrated margins, and (unlike the related elms) a symmetrical base to the leaf blade. The leaves are in two distinct rows; they have pinnation, pinnate Venation (botany) , venation and each vein extends to the leaf margin, where it terminates in a tooth. Zelkova Sicula
''Zelkova sicula'' is a species of ''Zelkova'' in the family Ulmaceae, endemic to Sicily. Description It is a deciduous shrub growing to tall; its natural mature size is unknown, as all existing specimens have been heavily browsed by goats, limiting their growth. The leaves are oval, long and wide, with a petiole long; the margins are lobed, with 6–8 lobes on each side. Conservation The only known population, found in 1991, consists of 200–250 plants growing on the Monti Iblei area, in Buccheri, in southeast Sicily near Syracuse. This population are all thought to derive from possibly just one clone, or at the most only a very few distinct individuals. ''Zelkova abelicea'' is a species of tree in the family Ulmaceae. It is referred to by the common names Cretan zelkova, and on Crete proper as abelitsia (αμπελιτσιά). It is endemic to Crete. It is found in small numbers and is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN red list of endangered species. Growth habit It is a medium-sized tree that grows from to tall. Édouard Spach
Édouard Spach (23 November 1801 – 18 May 1879) was a French botanist. The son of a merchant in Strasbourg, in 1824 he went to Paris, where he studied botany with René Desfontaines (1750–1831) and Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu (1748–1836). He then became the secretary of Charles-François Brisseau de Mirbel (1776–1854). When de Mirbel became a professor at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle (National Museum of Natural History), he followed him and remained at the museum for the remainder of his career.
