Zef
Zef () is a South African counterculture, counter-culture movement. Kyle Hans Brockmann has compared zef counter-culture to many similar anarchic Subculture, sub-cultures in the northern hemisphere. Etymology Yolandi Visser of Die Antwoord said, "It's associated with people who soup their cars up and rock gold and shit. Zef is, you're poor but you're fancy. You're poor but you're sexy, you've got style." The concept of "zef" originated in the 1960s and 1970s as a derogatory term to refer to working class whites, including residents of Trailer park, caravan parks. It is a Clipping (morphology), shortening of the name of the Ford Zephyr motorcar that was popular worldwide from the 1950s to the 1970s. Die Antwoord
Die Antwoord (; ) is a South African hip hop duo formed in Cape Town in 2008. The duo consists of rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visser (also spelled Yo-Landi Visser and stylized as ¥o-Landi Vi$$er). Their music, a fusion of hip hop with rave music, is frequently produced by DJ Hi-Tek, also known as God, and performed in both English and Afrikaans. Die Antwoord rose to international fame in 2010 through the virality of the music video for their song "Enter the Ninja" on social media and through blog posts, soon signing to Interscope Records and reissuing their debut studio album, ''SOS'', later that year. Anri du Toit (born 3 March 1984), known professionally as Yolandi Visser (stylised as ¥o-Landi Vi$$er), is a South African singer, rapper, and songwriter. She is one of two vocalists in the alternative hip hop group Die Antwoord, along with Watkin Tudor Jones. Visser appeared in the 2015 Neill Blomkamp film ''Chappie (film), Chappie''. Early life Anri du Toit was born on 3 March 1984 in Port Alfred, South Africa. Watkin Tudor Jones (born 26 September 1974), better known by his stage names Ninja and Max Normal, is a South African rapper, songwriter, singer, record producer, performance artist, and director. The Voëlvry movement () in South Africa was a genre of anti-apartheid music sung in Afrikaans. The term Voëlvry means both "free as a bird" and "outlaw". This movement has been said to have started on April 4, 1989 in Johannesburg in a packed club. This marked the beginning of what some have called a ''rock and roll uprising''. The Voëlvry movement used music in the Afrikaans language to show pride. The movement focused on Afrikaner youth. The main goal of the movement was to get Afrikaner youth to see the changes that had to occur in the “authoritarian, patriarchal culture”. Robert Craig Jansen van Vuuren (born 26 March 1976) is a South African comedian, actor, presenter, theatre maker, and writer. Early life Van Vuuren was born in Port Elizabeth. Koos Kombuis (born ''André le Roux du Toit'', 5 November 1954) is a South African musician, singer, songwriter and writer who became famous as part of a group of anti-establishment maverick Afrikaans musicians, who, under the collective name of ''Voëlvry'' (directly translated meaning "Free as a bird"; in Afrikaans "voëlvry" is often potentially "synonymous" to the words "fugitive" and "outlaw"), toured campuses across South Africa in the 1980s, to "''liberate Afrikaans from the shackles of its past''".
