Women's Football In Iraq
Women's football in Iraq is popular as there are less social restrictions on women than in the rest of the Arab world . One of the barriers to the sport's growth is the prejudice that many women experience as a result of playing the sport. The Iraq women's national football team, national team has never taken part in the FIFA Women's World Cup or the AFC Women's Asian Cup. They are currently ranked joint 138th (and last) due to being inactive. In 2016, the Iraqi Women's Football League was founded and Ghaz Al-Shamal club won the first women's title. The Iraq Football Association (IFA) () is the governing body of football in Iraq, controlling the Iraq national football team, Iraqi national team and the Iraqi football league system. The Iraqi Football Association was founded in 1948 and has been a member of FIFA since 1950, the Asian Football Confederation since 1970, and the Sub-confederation regional body West Asian Football Federation since 2001. The Iraq women's national football team is the female representative football team for Iraq. History The Iraq women's team has its roots in futsal, a game with some similarities to football, played on an indoor court. Futsal has been more accessible to women in Iraq than football, and the Iraq Football Association has organized futsal tournaments with the intention to develop some of the players into football players. The team played its first international match in 2010. Iraq's first participation in a women's major football tournament was the 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup qualification. The Iraqi Women's Football League () is the league competition for women's football in Iraq. It is run by the Iraq Football Association and was first played in the 2015–16 season. The league currently consists of seven teams. The current champions are Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, who won their first title in the 2023–24 season. Association football has been included in every Summer Olympic Games as a men's competition sport, except 1896 (the inaugural Games) and 1932 (in an attempt to promote the new FIFA World Cup tournament). Women's football was added to the official program at the Atlanta 1996 Games. In order to avoid competition with the World Cup, FIFA have restricted participation of elite players in the men's tournament in various ways: currently, squads for the men's tournament are required to be composed of players under 23 years of age, with three permitted exceptions. The sport of football in the country of Iraq is run by the Iraq Football Association. The association administers the national football team as well as the Iraqi football league system. Football is the most popular sport in Iraq. National teams The national team have qualified for the final tournament of the World Cup once in 1986 which was held in Mexico. Success in the Asian Cup has been more widespread, winning the tournament in 2007 and finishing fourth in 1976 and 2015. As of 2015 the women's national team have not entered either of these competitions. The under-23 side has had success at the Asian Games winning silver at the 2006 edition in Qatar and bronze in the 2014 tournament, held in South Korea. Their best placing in Olympic football has been fourth at Athens in 2004.
