WISS (AM)
WISS (1100 kHz) is an American AM radio station (with two FM translators) broadcasting a progressive talk radio format, featuring local news and information as well as statewide programming originating from the Civic Media network. It is licensed to Berlin, Wisconsin, and serves central Wisconsin and Fox Valley. It formerly operated at 1090 kHz. The station is owned by Sage Weil, through licensee Civic Media, Inc, acquired in 2022. WISS changed its music format from classic country to soft oldies on February 2, 2009. Artists heard as part of the new format, according to the station's website, include The Beatles, Carpenters, The Supremes, Barry Manilow, Anne Murray, Frank Sinatra, Kenny Rogers, and Neil Diamond. WISS Trivia Contest
WISS Trivia Contest was a trivia contest that was held annually on WISS between 1982 and 2005. The contest was billed as the "world's longest-running commercial trivia contest" before its 2006 cancellation. Radio station The trivia contest began in 1982 on Hometown Broadcasting's WISS in Berlin, Wisconsin. In the late 1990s the trivia contest was simulcast on both of Hometown Broadcasting's radio stations (WISS and WBJZ-FM/WAUH). The 2005 contest was broadcast only on WAUH. Rules The contest traditionally started on the first Saturday morning of February (often at 10:00 a.m. local time), and it ran continuously until some time on Sunday morning. The contest was 21 hours long from 1982 to 1999 and 2002 to 2003. The 2000 and 2001 contests were shortened to 9 daylight hours because WISS was unable to get a Federal Communications Commission waiver to broadcast outside its normal daytime hours. Benno Wiss (born 13 July 1962) is a Swiss retired track cyclist and road bicycle racer, who was a professional road rider from 1984 to 1986. Jarkko Wiss (born 17 April 1972) is a Finnish football manager and a former international footballer, who serves as the manager of Kuopion Palloseura (KuPS). During his playing career, Wiss won four Finnish championship titles, with Tampereen Pallo-Veikot, HJK Helsinki and twice with Tampere United. He was capped 43 times for the Finland national team during 1996–2007. ''The Land of Gorch'' was a recurring adult puppetry skit that appeared in the first season of the American comedy television program ''Saturday Night Live,'' featuring Jim Henson's Muppets. His characters appeared regularly on the late-night comedy television program.
