Rijkswaterstaat, founded in 1798 as the ''Bureau voor den Waterstaat'' and formerly translated to Directorate General for Public Works and Water Management, is a Directorate-General of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management of the Netherlands. Its role is the practical execution of the public works and water management, including the construction and maintenance of waterways and roads, and flood protection and prevention. The agency was also involved in the construction of big railway projects such as the Betuweroute and the HSL-Zuid. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (; I&W) is the Dutch Ministry responsible for transport, aviation, public works, land management and water resource management. The Ministry was created in 2010 as the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment following the merger of the Ministry of Transport and Water Management and the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment. In 2017, the Ministry was renamed the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and the responsibilities for environmental policy and climate change policy were transferred to the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Martin Wijnen
Martin Wijnen (born 1966) is a Dutch retired military officer and government official who currently serves as the Director-General of Rijkswaterstaat since January 1, 2024. A retired lieutenant general, he previously served as the fifth Commander of the Royal Netherlands Army before stepping down in 2024. Wijnen also previously served as the Commander of the 43 Mechanized Brigade. Biography After graduating from the Royal Military Academy in civil engineering, Martin was, for his junior officer assignments, stationed in Germany as an armoured engineer. In 1992, he moved back to work in the G3 Branch of a Divisional HQ after being promoted to the rank of captain. His first deployment followed later that year as CO of a Mine Clearance Training Team in Cambodia. The coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands was originally adopted in 1815 and later modified in 1907. The arms are a composite of the arms of the former Dutch Republic and the arms of the House of Nassau, it features a checkered shield with a lion grasping a sword in one hand and a bundle of arrows in the other and is the heraldic symbol of the monarchy of the Netherlands, monarch (King Willem-Alexander) and the country. Rijswijk
Rijswijk (), formerly known as Ryswick ( ) in English, is a town and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. Its population was 59.642 in 2024, and it has an area of , of which is water. The municipality also includes the former hamlets of 't Haantje and Sion, currently also known as Rijswijk Buiten.
