Walking Excavator
The term walking excavator may apply to two different forms of heavy equipment, the historic walking power shovel or dragline excavator that began to appear already early in the 20th century, or the contemporary version of all-terrain excavator popularly known as a spider excavator. The original walking excavators were enormous and unwieldy machines which alternately raised and lowered sets of foot plates or sections of continuous track, tracks to maneuver in all directions - albeit typically very slowly. The modern equally highly-specialized excavators (which followed a different evolutionary path and are still little known by the general public) more closely resembles as standard small excavator (complete with backhoe, boom, stick, Bucket (machine part), bucket and cab on a rotating platform known as the "house"). Rock crawling is an extreme form of Off-roading, off-road driving using specialized vehicles ranging from stock to highly modified, to overcome obstacles. In rock crawling, drivers typically drive highly modified four-wheel-drive vehicles such as trucks, Jeeps, and "Buggy (automobile), buggies" over very harsh terrain. Driving locations include boulders, mountain foothills, rock piles, mountain trails, etc. Rock crawling is about slow-speed, careful and precise driving, and high torque generated through large gear reductions (100:1 or more) in the vehicle's drivetrain. Rock crawlers often drive up, down and across obstacles that appear impassable. Rock crawling competitions range from local events to national series. Big Muskie
Big Muskie was a dragline excavator built by Bucyrus-Erie and owned by the Central Ohio Coal Company (formerly a division of American Electric Power), weighing and standing nearly 22 stories tall. It mined coal in the U.S. state of Ohio from 1969 to 1991. It was dismantled and sold for scrap in 1999. Design specifications and service The Big Muskie was a model 4250-W dragline and was the only one ever built by the Bucyrus-Erie company. Big Brutus
Big Brutus is the nickname of the Bucyrus-Erie model 1850-B electric power shovel, which was the second largest of its type in operation in the 1960s and 1970s. Big Brutus is the centerpiece of a mining museum in West Mineral, Kansas, United States, where it was used in coal strip mining operations. The shovel was designed to dig from down to unearth relatively shallow coal seams, which would then be mined with smaller equipment. Description The fabrication of Big Brutus was completed in May 1963, after which it was shipped on 150 railroad cars to be assembled in Kansas. It operated until 1974, when coal was uneconomic to mine at the site. At that time, it was considered too big to move and was left in place.
