Volleyball In Canada
Volleyball in Canada dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. Today, the sport is played at various levels of competition throughout the country. History Volleyball was invented in the United States in 1895 and made its first appearance in Canada in 1900 when an Ottawa branch of the YMCA included it in its schedule. The sport caught on and soon spread to YMCAs in Toronto and Montreal. These centers conducted various tournaments, which were, for a long time, the only organized manifestations of the sport in Canada. While the sport spread throughout the United States, Russia and Asia before the First World War, it lay relatively dormant in Canada. With the creation of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) shortly after the Second World War, the sport gained international recognition. World Organization Volleyball For Disabled
World ParaVolley, formerly the World Organization Volleyball for Disabled (WOVD), is an international organization that is for people with physical disabilities. It is affiliated with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The World Organization Volleyball for Disabled was established in 1981 and was part of the International Sports Organization for Disabled (ISOD). In 1992 the WOVD became its own separate Organization in Barcelona, Spain. The WOVD Headquarters were also established in the Netherlands. The WOVD is responsible for managing and controlling the conduct of international volleyball competitions for men, women and youth. The WOVD also liaises with IPC (as an independent organisation) and with other organizations for people with or without disabilities. Mark Heese
Mark Heese (born August 15, 1969) is a Canadian male beach volleyball player. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Heese began playing beach volleyball at the age of 19 at the Balmy Beach Club in Toronto, and is a graduate of McMaster University where he played university volleyball for the Marauders for four seasons from 1988 to 1992. Heese is a three-time Olympian, which included the winning of a bronze medal in Atlanta during the 1996 Summer Olympics with partner John Child. Heese and Child also finished in 5th place during both the 2000 Summer Olympics and 2004 Summer Olympics. He also is a ten-time Canadian National champion winning with John Child (7), Rich Van Huzien (1) and Ahren Cadieux (2). John Child (born May 4, 1967) is a retired professional Canadian male beach volleyball player. Child began playing beach volleyball in tournaments at age 16, and is a graduate of Centennial College. He played in three Olympic Games; Atlanta in 1996, Sydney in 2000, and Athens in 2004.
