Town Status In The United Kingdom
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, a town traditionally was a settlement which had a charter to hold a market or fair and therefore became a "market town". In Scotland, the equivalent is known as a burgh. There are two types of burgh: royal burghs and burghs of barony. Town status The Local Government Act 1972 allows civil parishes in England, Parish Councils in England and Wales to resolve themselves to be Town council, Town Councils, under section (245 subsection 6) and thus declare that the settlement is a town. Many former Urban district (Great Britain and Ireland), urban districts and municipal boroughs have such a status, along with other settlements with no prior town status. Historically, villages became towns by award of a market charter. The cultural importance placed on charters remains, and it is not an unusual event for towns across the UK to celebrate their charter in an annual Charter Day (normally a fair or medieval market). Kidlington
Kidlington is a village and civil parish in the Cherwell district of Oxfordshire, England. It is in-between the River Cherwell and Oxford Canal, north of Oxford and south-west of Bicester. Road Town
Road Town, located on Tortola, is the capital and largest town of the British Virgin Islands. It is situated on the horseshoe-shaped Road Harbour in the centre of the island's south coast. The population was about 15,000 in 2018. The name is derived from the nautical term " the roads", a place less sheltered than a harbour but which ships can easily get to. A development called Wickham's Cay, consisting of two areas that were reclaimed from the sea and a marina, have enabled Road Town to emerge as a haven for yacht chartering and a centre of tourism. Bodden Town (village)
Bodden Town is the former capital of the Cayman Islands and the largest district in the territory. It is situated on a natural harbour and a coral reef. The first settlement was named after a government leader, William Bodden. Once ravaged by pirates, this village is known for its remains of a wall and cannon. West Bay is a district located on the west side of the British Overseas Territory of the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean. The population is 15,335.
