Tourist Athlete
Tourist athlete, also Olympic tourist, is a term for athletes who attend events, particularly the Winter Olympics, without having qualified to be there competitively. History Development of the issue The Olympic games were originally an amateur event when they began in 1896, though they became increasingly professionalised in the second half of the 20th century. Additionally, as the 20th century went on, more countries joined the Olympic Movement, each of which could send at least one athlete to take part in an event without even being qualified for it by performance or capability. For non-alpine countries, this meant that athletes could be selected to compete at the Winter Olympics as part of national teams who were essentially amateur athletes with minimal or even no record of taking part in competitive events. The Winter Olympic Games (), also known as the Winter Olympics, is a major international multi-sport event held once every four years for sports practiced on snow and ice. The first Winter Olympic Games, the 1924 Winter Olympics, were held in Chamonix, France. Jamil El Reedy
Jamil Omar Hatem Abdulalem Jamil El Reedy (; born 2 October 1965 in Cairo) is a retired Egyptian alpine skier. El Reedy grew up in Plattsburgh, New York, USA. He was the first sportsperson to represent Egypt at the Winter Olympics. Early life Jamil El Reedy's parents moved from Egypt to Plattsburgh, New York, USA following the Six-Day War. He learned to ski on Whiteface Mountain with his father coaching him. He gained local recognition as a star skier in his high school. Owing to his Egyptian heritage, he qualified to represent Egypt at the 1984 Winter Olympics. Jamaica National Bobsleigh Team
The Jamaica national bobsleigh team represents Jamaica in international bobsleighing competitions. The men's team debut in the 1988 Winter Olympic Games four-man bobsleigh in Calgary, Alberta, was received as underdogs in a cold weather sport represented by a nation with a tropical environment. Michael David Edwards (born 5 December 1963), better known as Eddie the Eagle, is an English ski jumper and Olympian who in 1988 became the first competitor to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping, finishing last in the Normal Hill and Large Hill events. Gary Charles di Silvestri (born February 3, 1967, in Staten Island, New York, United States) cross-country skier who competed for Dominica at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the 15 kilometre classical race. Gary di Silvestri is a graduate of Monsignor Farrell High School in Staten Island, New York, where he was a member of the football, wrestling and track & field teams. Angelica Morrone di Silvestri (born 25 November 1965) is a cross-country skier who competed for Dominica at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the cross-country skiing race. She and her husband Gary di Silvestri earned points by competing in qualifying races in lower level tournaments in New Zealand and North America. She finished at or near the bottom in many qualifying races, but earned enough points to qualify for the Olympics. Bill Mallon
William James Mallon (born February 2, 1952) is an American orthopedic surgeon, former professional golfer and a leading authority on the history of the Olympic Games. Early life and amateur career Mallon was born in Paterson, New Jersey. He studied at Duke University and graduated magna cum laude with an A.B. in math and physics. While at Duke he played collegiate golf and was a two-time All-American, twice voted to the Outstanding College Athletes of America and was a two-time participant in the NCAA tournament. He won over 40 amateur tournaments including two victories each at the Massachusetts Amateur and New England Amateur. He also has won the Middle Atlantic Amateur once. Several tropical nations have participated in the Winter Olympics despite not having the climate for winter sports. Partly because of that, their entries are a subject of human interest stories during the Games. No tropical nation has ever won a Winter Olympic medal. The first warm-weather, but not fully tropical, nation participating in the Winter Olympics was Mexico. Much of Mexico is at a latitude north of the Tropic of Cancer, and most of the country has a subtropical highland or semi-arid climate, so it is not exclusively a tropical nation. Nonetheless, Mexico made its Winter Olympic debut at the 1928 Winter Olympics with a five-man bobsleigh team that finished eleventh of twenty-three entrants.
