Tornado Intensity
Tornado intensity is the measure of wind speeds and potential risk produced by a tornado. Intensity can be measured by In situ#Earth and atmospheric sciences, ''in situ'' or remote sensing measurements, but since these are impractical for wide-scale use, intensity is usually inferred by Proxy (statistics), proxies, such as damage. The Fujita scale, Enhanced Fujita scale, and the International Fujita scale rate tornadoes by the damage caused. In contrast to other major storms such as hurricanes and typhoons, such classifications are only assigned retroactively. Wind speed alone is not enough to determine the intensity of a tornado. An EF0 tornado may damage trees and peel some shingles off roofs, while an EF5 tornado can rip well-anchored homes off their foundations, leaving them bare— even deforming large skyscrapers. Ted Fujita
was a Japanese and American meteorologist whose research primarily focused on severe weather. His research at the University of Chicago on severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and typhoons revolutionized the knowledge of each. Although he is best known for creating the Fujita scale of tornado intensity and damage, he also discovered downbursts and microbursts and was an instrumental figure in advancing modern understanding of many severe weather phenomena and how they affect people and communities, especially through his work exploring the relationship between wind speed and damage. The 1999 Bridge Creek–Moore tornado was a large, long-lived, and exceptionally powerful Fujita scale, F5 tornado in which the Tornado records, highest tornado wind speed ever measured with a doppler radar was recorded at by a Doppler on Wheels. Considered the strongest tornado ever recorded to have affected the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, metropolitan area, the tornado devastated southern portions of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma as well as surrounding municipalities to the south and southwest of the city during the early evening hours of Monday, May 3, 1999. The 1999 Oklahoma tornado outbreak was a large, historic, and devastating tornado outbreak that took place across much of the Central United States, with most tornadoes occurring from May 2–5, 1999; scattered activity occurred afterwards until May 8 in parts of the Eastern United States, as well as southern Canada. Doppler on Wheels (DOW) is a fleet of quickly deployable truck-mounted weather radars managed by FARM (Flexible Array of Radars and Mesonets), an American research company affiliated with the University of Alabama Huntsville. From April 26 to 27, 1991, multiple supercells across Oklahoma and Kansas led to a regional tornado outbreak. Forced by a potent trough and focused along a dryline, these distinct thunderstorms moved northeast through a moist and highly unstable environment. A total of 55 tornadoes were confirmed, many of which were strong, F2 or greater on the Fujita scale. A widely documented F5 tornado tore through Andover, Kansas, killing 17 people. The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) was founded by Terence Meaden in 1974. Originally called the Tornado Research Organisation, it was expanded in 1982 following the inclusion of the Thunderstorm Census Organisation (TCO) after the death of its founder Morris Bower and his wife. The current Head of TORRO is Paul Knightley, a professional meteorologist. TORRO comprises nearly 400 members in the United Kingdom and others from around the world, from amateurs to professional meteorologists, and almost 30 staff.
