Ticking Time Bomb Scenario
The ticking time bomb scenario is a thought experiment that has been used in the ethics debate over whether interrogational torture can ever be justified. The scenario can be formulated as follows: Suppose that a person with knowledge of an imminent terrorist attack that will kill many people is in the hands of the authorities, and he will disclose the information needed to prevent the attack only if he is tortured. Should he be tortured? It is usually planted as the assumption of a ticking time bomb that still has not exploded but will happen in a short period of time. If the terrorist who placed it is detained and is forced through torture to tell where he placed it, the bomb could be deactivated, thus saving many lives. Some consequentialists argue that nations, even those that legally disallow torture, can justify its use if they have a terrorist in custody who possesses critical knowledge, such as the location of a time bomb or a weapon of mass destruction that will soon ... Ticking (sound)
Ticking is the sharp and rhythmic sound produced by various devices. It is particularly associated with mechanical clocks and watches, where it is created as their escapement mechanism regulates the movement of gears. It is also produced by the operation of certain devices not intended to keep time, such as turn signals. As technological advances have enabled the creation of such devices without mechanisms that create such a sound, some devices have artificial ticking sounds generated to resemble their historical counterparts. In timekeeping In many analog timekeeping devices, clocks and watches specifically, this sound, often described as "ticking" or a "tick-tock", results from the interaction between the escapement and the gear train, marking the passage of time in discrete increments. Ticking has been a defining characteristic of mechanical timekeeping since the invention of early clocks in the Middle Ages, serving both a functional role in time measurement and a cultural s ... Ticking (textile)
Ticking is a type of cloth, traditionally a tightly-woven cotton or linen textile. It is traditionally used to cover tick mattresses and bed pillows. The tight weave makes it more durable and hinders the stuffing (palliasse, straw, chaff, hair, down feathers, etc.) from poking through the fabric. To make it even tighter, ticking could be waxed, soaped, or Starch#Clothing starch, starched. Tick materials designed to hold foam may be knit, or more porous. In English-speaking countries ticking commonly has a striped design, in muted colors such as brown, grey or blue, and occasionally red or yellow, against a plain, neutral background. Although traditionally used for mattresses and pillows, the material has found other uses, such as serving as a backing for quilts, woven coverlet, coverlets, and other bedding. It is sometimes woven with a twill weave. Ticking is no longer restricted to a utility fabric and has found uses in interior decorating styles intending to evoke a homespun o ... Rabicano
Rabicano, sometimes called white ticking, is a horse coat color characterized by limited roan (horse), roaning in a specific pattern: its most minimal form is expressed by white hairs at the top of a horse's tail (horse), tail, often is expressed by additional interspersed white hairs seen first at the flank, then other parts of the body radiating out from the flank, where the white hairs will be most pronounced. Rabicano is distinct from true roan (horse), roan, which causes evenly interspersed white hairs throughout the body, except for solid-colored head and legs. Etymology The word, "rabicano" is of Spanish language, Spanish origin - ''rabo'' meaning "tail" and ''cano'' meaning "white" - thus, it described a horse with white hairs in its tail.Juan de la Cruz Puig. It is influenced by a wide range of styles that were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States. The television show ''Soul Train'' and the 1980s films ''Breakin''', ''Beat Street'', and ''Wild Style'' showcased these crews and dance styles in their early stages; therefore, giving hip-hop dance mainstream exposure. The dance industry responded with a commercial, studio-based version of hip-hop—sometimes called "new style"—and a hip-hop influenced style of jazz dance called "jazz-funk". Classically trained dancers developed these studio styles in order to create choreography from the hip-hop dances that were performed on the street. Because of this development, hip-hop dance is practiced in both dance studios and outdoor spaces. The commercialization of hip-hop dance continued into the 19 ...
