The Verve
The Verve were an English Rock music, rock band formed in Wigan in 1990 by lead vocalist Richard Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bass guitarist Simon Jones (musician), Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury. Guitarist and keyboard player Simon Tong later became a member in their first reunion only. Beginning with a Psychedelic rock, psychedelic, shoegaze sound with their debut LP, ''A Storm in Heaven'', by 1997 the band had released three Extended play, EPs and three albums. They endured name and line-up changes, break-ups, health problems, drug abuse and various lawsuits. Urban Hymns
''Urban Hymns'' is the third studio album by English Rock music, rock band the Verve, released on 29 September 1997 on Hut Records. The group had broken up while promoting ''A Northern Soul'' in August 1995, though they reformed two weeks later without guitarist Nick McCabe. Frontman Richard Ashcroft moved to Bath, Somerset, where he made demos; Simon Tong joined the group soon afterwards. Following aborted recording sessions with producers John Leckie and Owen Morris, the band sought a new guitarist, contacting former Suede (band), Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, who played with them for a week before departing amidst creative differences. In 1996, The Verve started recording at Olympic Studios in London, first with producer Youth (musician), Martin "Youth" Glover, followed by engineer Chris Potter (producer), Chris Potter. Simon Jones (musician)
Simon Robin David Jones (born 29 July 1972) is an English bass guitarist. He played bass and provided occasional backing vocals for the rock band The Verve. The Verve Away from the musical side of The Verve, Jones is the only other band member other than the band's main mouthpiece, lead singer Richard Ashcroft, who tends to speak publicly and in interviews. Most notably, he, along with Ashcroft, made a speech at the 2007 Q Awards as they won a classic album award for their 1997 album ''Urban Hymns''. He thanked the band members’ wives and children and also thanked former Verve guitarist Simon Tong, who was not included in the newly reformed Verve line up. He also did an interview on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show after the band's 2007 reformation, and he also appeared alone and alongside Ashcroft in a handful of Verve documentaries and other miscellaneous interviews throughout the 1990s. Sonnet (The Verve Song)
"Sonnet" is a song by the English rock band the Verve and is featured on their third album, ''Urban Hymns''. It was released on 2 March 1998 as the final single from the album. The ballad has the same instrumental layout as "The Drugs Don't Work", consisting of acoustic and electric guitars backed up with a string section mainly consisting of violins. At the start of 1998, Hut wanted to release another single from the album, an idea which the band disagreed with. Unusually, Hut pressed them on this matter, and so the band finally agreed to release "Sonnet", but only in a format that would make it ineligible for chart recognition. Consequently, "Sonnet" was released as part of a set of four 12-inch records (backed by "Stamped", "So Sister" and "Echo Bass"). The release of "Sonnet" was limited to just 5,000 copies, despite the huge radio coverage it received, and the UK's Official Charts Company refused to recognise it as a single because of the extra content, as planned. "The Drugs Don't Work" is a song by English Rock music, rock band the Verve. The song was written by Richard Ashcroft and is featured on their third studio album, ''Urban Hymns''. It was released on 1 September 1997 as the second single from the album, debuting at number one on the UK singles chart. The beginning of the video shows the band walking down the street, following on from the end of "Bitter Sweet Symphony". "Bitter Sweet Symphony" is a song by the English rock band the Verve, released on 16 June 1997 by Hut Recordings and Virgin Records as the lead single from their third album, ''Urban Hymns''. It was produced by Youth (musician), Youth at Olympic Studios, London. The Verve developed "Bitter Sweet Symphony" from a Sampling (music), sample from a 1965 version of the Rolling Stones song "The Last Time (Rolling Stones song), The Last Time" by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra, adding vocals, strings, guitar and percussion. After a lawsuit by the Rolling Stones' former manager, Allen Klein, the Verve relinquished all royalties and the Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were added to the songwriting credits. In 2019, ten years after Klein's death, Jagger, Richards, and Klein's son ceded the rights to the Verve songwriter, Richard Ashcroft.
