The Riffs
The Riffs are a rock and roll and punk band from Portland, Oregon, United States. They have released three full-length albums, all on indie labels, namely Pelado Records, Vendetta Records, and TKO Records. Influences The Riffs are heavily influenced by early punk bands, most notably the Sex Pistols, whose influence can be heard most prominently in the guitars, Sham 69 and the Dead Boys (they paid tribute to the Dead Boys on the cover of "Dead End Dream"). Like other bands that played the first wave of punk music, they were also fans of Protopunk like Eddie and the Hot Rods and The Velvet Underground, as displayed by their cover of "Waiting for My Man" on ''Underground Kicks''. TKO Records
TKO Records is an independent punk rock record label in Portland, Oregon. The label is primarily known for its role in the late 1990s American street punk scene and has continued its notability as a source of new releases, reissues, and archival recordings. The ''OC Weekly'' newspaper recognized the label as "best record label" in Orange County in 2011 and its record store of the same name as "best punk-rock record store" in Orange County, 2008. History TKO Records was founded by Mark Rainey in 1997 in San Francisco, California. Pelado Records
In Mexican society, ''pelado'' is "a term said to have been invented to describe a certain class of urban 'bum' in Mexico in the 1920s." It was used, however, much earlier. Lewis Garrard used it in his book, "Wah-to-yah and the Taos Trail," his first-hand account of crossing the Plains to Taos, published in 1850. He wrote: "This hos has feelin's hyar," slapping his breast, "for poor human natur in any fix, but for these palous (pelados) he doesn't care a cuss." The Velvet Underground
The Velvet Underground were an American Rock music, rock band formed in New York City in 1964. Eddie And The Hot Rods
Eddie and the Hot Rods are a pub rock band from Essex founded in 1975. They are best known for their 1977 UK top ten hit " Do Anything You Wanna Do", released under the shortened name Rods. The group broke up in 1985, but reformed in 1996. Singer Barrie Masters was the only constant member until his death in 2019. Protopunk
Proto-punk (or protopunk) is rock music from the 1960s to mid-1970s that foreshadowed the punk rock genre and movement. A retrospective label, the musicians involved were generally not originally associated with each other and came from a variety of backgrounds and styles; together, they anticipated many of punk's musical and thematic attributes. Sham 69
Sham 69 are an English punk rock band that formed in Hersham in Surrey in 1975. They changed their musical direction after seeing the Sex Pistols play live in early 1976. They were one of the most successful punk bands in the United Kingdom, achieving five top 20 singles, including "If the Kids Are United" and "Hurry Up Harry". The group's popularity saw them perform on the BBC’s ''Top of the Pops'', and they appeared in the rockumentary film ''D.O.A.: A Rite of Passage, D.O.A.''. An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME.
