The Orb
The Orb are an English electronic music group founded in 1988 by Alex Paterson and Jimmy Cauty. Known for their psychedelic sound, the Orb developed a cult following among clubbers "coming down" from drug-induced highs. Their influential 1991 debut album '' The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld'' pioneered the UK's nascent ambient house movement, while its UK chart-topping follow-up '' U.F.Orb'' represented the group's commercial peak. Beginning as ambient and dub DJs in London, the Orb's early performances were inspired by electronic artists of the 1970s, most notably Brian Eno, Cluster, and Kraftwerk. The Orb have maintained their signature science fiction aesthetic despite numerous personnel changes, including the departure of Cauty and members Kris Weston, Andy Falconer, Simon Phillips, Nick Burton, and Andy Hughes. FFWD
''FFWD'' is an eponymous album by FFWD – Robert Fripp, Thomas Fehlmann, Kris Weston, and Dr Alex Paterson. The title is also a play on the abbreviation often used on the fast forward control of a tape deck or CD player, also referenced in the "double-arrow" graphic used on the cover. The album peaked at #48 in the UK Albums Chart in August 1994. Production Fripp was recorded for hours improvising on his guitar; Weston constructed these improvisations into working parts for the album. Paterson and Fehlmann had no production input in this. Electronic music broadly is a group of music genres that employ electronic musical instruments, circuitry-based music technology and software, or general-purpose electronics (such as personal computers) in its creation. Andy Hughes
Andy Hughes (11 November 1965 – 12 June 2009) was an English electronic music producer. He is best known for his work with the Orb, where he helped mix and produce '' Orbus Terrarum'', '' Orblivion'', and '' Cydonia'', as well as the Orb's singles from this period. Hughes left the Orb during the production of ''Cydonia'', which was reworked after his departure. In 2009, he mastered the Orb's '' Baghdad Batteries (Orbsessions Volume III)'' for release. He also did additional original production work and performed remixes for the Cranberries and Tangerine Dream. Prior to his Orb years he had helped to design and build the studios for Bunk Junk & Genius and worked with many famous artists. Andy Falconer
Andy Falconer is an English-born engineer, producer and artist mainly associated with electronic and ambient music. As well as his own musical project afp. He is also along with Alex Paterson a member of the band Sedibus, and former member of the bands The Orb and Apollo XI. Background Andy was born in 1965 in Oxford, England, and is the youngest of three children. His father James Falconer ran his own pharmacy while his mother Rita Falconer kept house. Kris Weston
Kristian "Kris" Weston (a.k.a. Thrash) (born 1972) is a British electronic musician, producer and remixer best known for his work as a member of the Orb. Around the beginning of his career, he worked with Andrew Weatherall on remixes of Meat Beat Manifesto, remixed for Primal Scream, Saint Etienne, U2 and others. He was still a teen when working on the first few albums by the Orb. Thrash was with the Orb for less than five years, from around 1990 to the end of 1995. Jimmy Cauty
James Francis Cauty (born 19 December 1956), also known as Rockman Rock, is an English artist and musician, best known as one-half of the duo the KLF, co-founder of the Orb and as the man who K Foundation Burn a Million Quid, burnt £1 million. He is married to artist and musician Alannah Currie, a former member of Thompson Twins. Early life and career Cauty was born on the Wirral Peninsula. As a 17-year-old artist, he drew a popular ''The Lord of the Rings'' poster (and later, a counterpart based on ''The Hobbit'') for British retailer Athena (retailer), Athena. Alex Paterson
Alex Paterson (also known as Dr Alex Paterson, born Duncan Alexander Robert Paterson; 15 October 1959) is an English musician and co-founder of ambient house group the Orb, in which he has worked since its inception. Life and work Paterson attended private boarding school Kingham Hill School in Oxfordshire between 1970 and 1979, at the same time as Killing Joke bassist Martin "Youth" Glover. Paterson was a roadie for Killing Joke in the 1980s and later worked in the A&R department of E.G. Records, to whom the band were signed. New York radio stations were a force driving his musical direction, especially the Chuck Chillout shows on 98.7 KISS FM.
