The Manor Studio (a.k.a. the Manor) was a recording studio in the manor house in the village of Shipton-on-Cherwell in Oxfordshire, England, north of the city of Oxford. Overview The Manor Studio was housed in a manor house which had been established in the 16th century and rebuilt in the 17th century. Around 1830 the house was remodelled and extended to left c.1830 for William Turner, a painter. The Manor and its outbuildings are listed as Grade II on the National Heritage List for England. The Manor was the third residential recording studio in the United Kingdom. The first being Ascot Sound Studios built between 1970 and 1971 by John Lennon in an addition to his Tittenhurst Park mansion, where he recorded his ''Imagine'' album. Michel Magne
Michel Magne (20 March 1930 in Lisieux, Calvados, France – 19 December 1984 in Cergy-Pontoise, Val-d'Oise) was a French film and experimental music composer. Early life He was the fifth child in a family of eight. As young as age five, he was intrigued by his parents' piano. The Lisieux cathedral's organist taught him to play keyboards, and soon he played the harmonium during Sunday services. At age nine he found his parents' Wagner discs, and thereafter would often quote Wagner in his works. He then studied music at the , in Caen, France. By age 16 he had written an oratorio and a piano concerto. In 1946, he left Caen to attend the Paris Conservatory, where he had lessons by Simone Plé-Caussade and Olivier Messiaen. ''Sandy'' is the second solo album by British folk rock musician Sandy Denny. It was released in September 1972. History Work on the album began just a fortnight after her UK tour promoting her debut solo album, '' The North Star Grassman and the Ravens'', ended in early November 1971 and continued through to May 1972. The first song recorded for the album was "The Quiet Joys of Brotherhood", a Richard Fariña lyric he had set to a traditional Irish melody " My Lagan Love"; Denny's ambitious multi-tracked vocal arrangement was inspired by the Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic. Demo sessions continued at the recently constructed Manor Studio in Oxfordshire, the first studio owned by Richard Branson's Virgin label. Sandy Denny
Alexandra Elene MacLean Denny (6 January 1947 – 21 April 1978) was an English singer-songwriter who was lead singer of the British folk rock band Fairport Convention. She has been described as "[a]rguably the pre-eminent British folk-rock singer/songwriter of her time". After briefly working with the Strawbs, Denny joined Fairport Convention in 1968, remaining with them until 1969. She formed the short-lived band Fotheringay in 1970, before focusing on a solo career. Between 1971 and 1977, Denny released four solo albums: ''The North Star Grassman and the Ravens'', ''Sandy (Sandy Denny album), Sandy'', ''Like an Old Fashioned Waltz'' and ''Rendezvous (Sandy Denny album), Rendezvous''. She also duetted with Robert Plant on "The Battle of Evermore" for Led Zeppelin's album ''Led Zeppelin IV'' in 1971. Vivian Stanshall (born Victor Anthony Stanshall; 21 March 1943 – 5 March 1995) was an English singer-songwriter, musician, author, poet and wit, best known for his work with the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, for his exploration of the British upper classes in ''Sir Henry at Rawlinson End'' (as a radio series for John Peel, as an audio recording, as a book and as a film), and for acting as Master of Ceremonies on Mike Oldfield's album ''Tubular Bells''. Tubular bells (also known as chimes) are musical instruments in the Percussion instrument, percussion family. Their sound resembles that of church bells, carillons, or a bell tower; the original tubular bells were made to duplicate the sound of church bells within an ensemble. The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (also known as the Bonzo Dog Band or the Bonzos) was created by a group of British art-school students in the 1960s. Let's Make Up And Be Friendly
''Let's Make Up And Be Friendly'' is the fifth studio album by the Bonzo Dog Band and their last album until 2007. The group had already disbanded when United Artists Records (which absorbed the Bonzos' label Liberty Records) informed band members that the group owed the label one more album. This 1972 farewell album was the result, recorded at The Manor Studio in November 1971, while the building itself was still in the process of being converted to accommodate the recording studio that was being built. This was The Bonzo Dog Band's last album of new material featuring all the original members until their reunion in 2006, by which time founder member Vivian Stanshall was deceased. A new studio album, '' Pour l'Amour des Chiens'' was released in December 2007. The album is today controlled by the Parlophone unit of Warner Music Group. Simon Heyworth
Simon Heyworth is an English record engineer and producer. He rose to prominence as engineer at Richard Branson's The Manor Studio in the 1970s, where he and Tom Newman worked on ''Tubular Bells'' (1973) by Mike Oldfield, which achieved significant commercial success in the UK. He has worked with various artists, including King Crimson, Simple Minds, Rick Wakeman, Iron Maiden, Marillion, and Nick Drake. Thomas Dennis Newman (born 7 May 1943) is an English record producer and musician. In 1970 he began working with Richard Branson and helped to found The Manor Studio in Oxford for the nascent Virgin Records. There he produced the recording of Mike Oldfield's ''Tubular Bells.'' Career In 1968 Newman played in a band called July whose only album was the eponymous ''July'' on UK Major Minor and US Epic. Before that he was in a British band called The Tomcats who played around London and later in Spain. In 1966, they recorded at least three EPs on Spanish Philips (436387, 436388 and 436826). Also an amateur painter, one of his paintings can be seen during the Beatles' rooftop concert behind the drum set.
