The Fylde
The Fylde () is a coastal plain in western Lancashire, England. It is roughly a square-shaped peninsula, bounded by Morecambe Bay to the north, the Ribble estuary to the south, the Irish Sea to the west, and the foot of the Bowland hills to the east which approximates to a section of the M6 motorway and West Coast Main Line. Geography It is a flat, alluvial plain, parts of which have deposits of and were once dug for peat. The River Wyre meanders across the Fylde from Garstang on the eastern edge, westwards towards Poulton and then northwards to the sea at Fleetwood. The area north and east of the tidal Wyre, known as Over Wyre, is the more rural side of the river. The Fylde is roughly trisected by the M55 motorway and A586 road. The west coast is almost entirely urban, containing the towns of Fleetwood, Cleveleys, Blackpool, St Annes and Lytham; with Thornton, Carleton and Poulton-le-Fylde not far inland. Kirkham, Lancashire
Kirkham aka Kirkam-in-Amounderness Hundred, Amounderness is a market town and civil parishes in England, civil parish in the Borough of Fylde in Lancashire, England, midway between Blackpool and Preston, Lancashire, Preston and adjacent to the town of Wesham. Bilsborrow
Bilsborrow is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Myerscough and Bilsborrow, in the Wyre district, in the county of Lancashire, England. The village population at the 2011 census was 632. It is on the A6 road and the Lancaster Canal. It is approximately east of Myerscough. Bilsborrow has a primary school, a post office and local shop, and a fish and chip shop, St Hilda's Church of England church and two public houses, the Roebuck and the White Bull, a canalside tavern Owd Nell's Tavern, a Premier Inn hotel, a canalside lodge, a guest house, and a themed thatched hamlet 'village' with restaurant, hotel and tavern. Stalmine
Stalmine is a village in the civil parish of Stalmine-with-Staynall, in the Wyre borough of Lancashire, England, in a part of the Fylde known as Over Wyre. The village is located on a small hill on the A588, the main road between Hambleton and Lancaster, with the highest level 75 ft above sea level. The village name has been spelled Stalmin (in 1205) and Stalemynne (in 1278). The village had a population of 1,087 at the 2011 Census. Village history The name is thought to mean the pool or stream at the mouth of the river, from the Old English and the Old Norse . St Michael's-on-Wyre
St Michael's on Wyre is a village on the Fylde, in the Borough of Wyre, in Lancashire, England; it lies on the River Wyre. The village is centred on the church of St Michael, which was founded before 640 AD. It is in the civil parish of Upper Rawcliffe with Tarnacre, which had a population in 2001 of 604. Location St Michael's on Wyre is situated on The Fylde, between Lancaster, Preston and Blackpool. Preesall
Preesall is a town, civil parish and electoral ward in Lancashire, England. The parish (until 1910 known as Preesall with Hackensall) covers the eastern bank of the estuary of the River Wyre, including Knott End-on-Sea, Pilling Lane and the village of Preesall itself. The parish of Preesall had a population of 5,314 recorded in the 2001 census, rising to 5,694 at the 2011 census. History There is evidence that the eastern side of the River Wyre was occupied during the Danish invasions of the 9th and 10th centuries. Preesall is mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as being a part of the Hundred of Amounderness and the Domesday place name is given as ''Pressouede''. Pilling is a village and civil parish within the Borough of Wyre, Wyre borough of Lancashire, England. Out Rawcliffe is a village and civil parish on the north bank of the River Wyre in the Over Wyre area of the Fylde in Lancashire, England. The population of the civil parish taken at the 2011 census was 626. It is the location of the medieval Rawcliffe Hall. Knott End-on-Sea
Knott End-on-Sea is a village in Lancashire, England, on the southern side of Morecambe Bay, across the Wyre estuary from Fleetwood. Knott End has a pub, the Bourne Arms, county library and golf club. Buses run regularly from Knott End and there is also a three-minute ferry crossing to Fleetwood. Knott End also has two clubs: The Squash and Knott End Working Men's Club.
