The Distillers Company
The Distillers Company plc was a leading Scotch whisky company and, at one time, a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. It was taken over in 1986 by Guinness & Co. and is now part of Diageo. History The Distillers Company origins lie in a trade association known as the Scotch Distillers' Association formed by Menzies, Barnard & Craig, John Bald & Co., John Haig & Co., MacNab Bros, Robert Mowbray and Macfarlane & Co. in 1865. It was incorporated in 1877 as The Distillers Company Ltd. (DCL) and in 1894 DCL was listed on the Edinburgh and Glasgow stock exchanges. During the early part of the 1900s, DCL embarked in programme of distillery acquisitions at low prices in the wake of the Pattisons crash of 1898. In 1914 DCL claimed to be the largest whisky distiller in the world. A public company is a company whose ownership is organized via shares of share capital, stock which are intended to be freely traded on a stock exchange or in over-the-counter (finance), over-the-counter markets. United Distillers
United Distillers was a Scottish company formed in 1987 from combining the businesses of Distillers Company and Arthur Bell & Sons, both owned by Guinness. The company owned six single malt Scotch brands, which were relaunched as the ''Classic Malts'' range. It also owned the Bernheim distillery (now owned by Heaven Hill) and the Stitzel-Weller distillery, both in Louisville, Kentucky in the United States. In 1997 Guinness merged with Grand Metropolitan to create Diageo, and in 1998 United Distillers was merged with International Distillers & Vintners to create United Distillers & Vintners, forming the spirits division of Diageo plc. Cardhu Distillery
Cardhu distillery is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery near Archiestown, Moray, Scotland. It was founded in 1824 by whisky smuggler John Cumming and his wife Helen. The distillery is run by Diageo and alongside the single malt Scotch, the distillery's whisky makes up an important part of the Johnnie Walker blended whiskies. The word "Cardhu" derives from the Scottish Gaelic ''Carn Dubh'', meaning "Black Rock". History The distillery was established in 1824 by John Cumming, who had previously been a whisky smuggler. The distillery was sited high up on Mannoch Hill, above the River Spey due to the peat softening the water. Caol Ila Distillery
Caol Ila distillery (; , " Sound of Islay Distillery") is a Scotch whisky distillery near Port Askaig on the isle of Islay, Scotland, owned by Diageo. History Caol Ila is derived from Gaelic ''Caol Ìle'' for " Sound of Islay" (lit. "Islay Strait") in reference to the distillery's location overlooking the strait between Islay and Jura. It was founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson. The distillery did not fare well, and changed hands in 1854 when Norman Buchanan, owner of the Isle of Jura Distillery, took over. In 1863 the business was acquired by Bulloch Lade & Co, of Glasgow, traders in whisky stocks. According to the 1871 census, Duncan Johnston was the Distillery Manager at the time. Brora Distillery
Brora distillery is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Brora, Scotland. It operated between 1819 and 1983 before being mothballed until 2021, when it was reactivated. History The Brora distillery was built in 1819 by the Marquess of Stafford, although it was known as "Clynelish" until the opening of the Clynelish Distillery in 1968, whereupon the name of the original Clynelish was changed to "Brora". George Lawson and his sons took over the distillery in 1846. In 1896 they sold it to the Glasgow blender James Ainslie and his business partner John Risk. Benromach Distillery
Benromach distillery is a Speyside distillery founded by Duncan McCallum and F.W. Brickman in 1898 and currently owned and run by Gordon and Macphail of Elgin. It is situated near Forres in Morayshire and is fed with spring water from the Chapelton Springs in the Romach Hills beside Forres. History Duncan MacCallum and F.W. Brickmann founded the Benromach Distillery Company in 1898. Duncan MacCallum had previously been working at the Glen Nevis Distillery in Campbeltown and FW Brickmann was a spirit broker in Leith, Edinburgh. Benrinnes Distillery
Benrinnes distillery is a malt whisky distillery in Aberlour producing an eponymous whisky. It was founded in 1826, and is still active. The distillery employed a unique partial triple distillation process until 2007. History The first time whisky was produced at the site of Benrinnes distillery was in 1826, when a distillery was founded by Peter McKenzie. This distillery was destroyed by a flood in 1829, and was rebuilt in 1835 in the outbuildings of a farmhouse by John Innes, and officially founded under the name ''Lyne of Ruthrie'' The distillery went bankrupt, and Lyne of Ruthrie was sold to William Smith. Banff Distillery
Banff distillery was Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Banff, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. History The first distillery to use the name "Banff" was built by James McKilligan & Co. in 1824 on Banff Bay in Inverboyndie. In 1837, ownership was transferred to Alex Mackay, and then, in 1852, to James Simpson Sr. and James Simpson Jr. In 1863, James Simpson Jr. built a new distillery, also in Inverboyndie. This distillery had better access to rail transport (via the Great North of Scotland Railway) and a better water source in the springs on Fiskaidly farm. Although the Banff distillery had dealt with fires and explosions in the past, a particularly bad fire damaged or destroyed much of the distillery apart from the warehouse on 9 May 1877. Inver House Distillers Ltd. is a Scotch whisky distiller based in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. The company is a subsidiary of ThaiBev. It owns and operates five whisky distilleries: Balblair, Balmenach, Pulteney, Knockdhu, and Speyburn, and sells blended whisky under the Hankey Bannister brand. Aultmore Distillery
Aultmore distillery is a whisky distillery in Keith, Moray, producing an eponymous single malt whisky. Its name is a derived from the phrase ''An t-Allt Mòr'', Gaelic for big burn, referring to its water source the Auchinderran burn. History Aultmore distillery was founded in 1895 by Alexander Edward, then owner of the Benrinnes distillery. The distillery was originally powered by a waterwheel, and was soon adapted to use a steam engine instead, which ran day and night for 70 years, apart from maintenance. During maintenance hours power was provided by the mainly retired waterwheel. The steam engine is now on display at the distillery site. The distillery was expanded in 1898, and production doubled. Adelphi Distillery
Adelphi distillery was a Scotch whisky distillery, which was founded in 1826 in Glasgow and closed in 1907. The name was revived in 1993, for an independent bottler of Scotch whisky. Adelphi distillery The Adelphi Distillery was founded in 1826 by brothers Charles and David Gray. It was sited just south of the Victoria Bridge, at the edge of the Gorbals area of Glasgow. The distillery was operated by the Gray family until 1880, when it was acquired by Messrs A. Walker and Co, a company who already owned large distilleries in Limerick and Liverpool. The Walkers invested in the distillery and added a Coffey still with which to distil grain spirit. By 1886, there were four pot stills and the Coffey still in full production.
