The Angiogenesis Foundation
The Angiogenesis Foundation, is a United States 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1994 for the study of angiogenesis. The foundation developed a therapy for canine cancer, called the Navy Protocol. This treatment works by starving the tumor of its blood supply. In 2004, they helped publicly launch the first antiangiogenic therapy for cancer, bevacizumab, starting with colorectal cancer. In 2010, the president and co-founder of the Angiogenesis Foundation, William Li, gave a well-received presentation at the TED conference on cancer prevention through antiangiogenic nutrition. Co-founder Dr. William Li won the 2024 Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach Award for his work in angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is the physiological process through which new blood vessels form from pre-existing vessels, formed in the earlier stage of vasculogenesis. Angiogenesis continues the growth of the vasculature mainly by processes of sprouting and splitting, but processes such as coalescent angiogenesis, vessel elongation and vessel cooption also play a role. Bevacizumab
Bevacizumab, sold under the brand name Avastin among others, is a monoclonal antibody medication used to treat a number of types of cancers and a specific eye disease. For cancer, it is given by slow injection into a vein (intravenous) and used for colon cancer, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, glioblastoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, and renal-cell carcinoma. In many of these diseases it is used as a first-line therapy. For age-related macular degeneration it is given by injection into the eye ( intravitreal). Common side effects when used for cancer include nose bleeds, headache, high blood pressure, and rash. Other severe side effects include gastrointestinal perforation, bleeding, allergic reactions, blood clots, and an increased risk of infection.
