Karen Julia Josephson (born January 10, 1964) is a former American synchronized swimmer who competed for Ohio State University and was a 1988 Olympic silver medalist and a 1992 Olympic gold medalist. She won one gold and one silver medal in duet, and one gold and one silver team medal at the World Aquatics Championships. She won gold medals in both duet and team at the Pan American Games. Ohio State University Josephson attended and competed in synchronized swimming for the Ohio State University from 1982-1985 under Head Coach Dr. Mary Jo Ruggieri. She helped lead OSU to three national championships, and was the 1985 United States Synchronized Swimming Inter-collegiate Athlete of the year. Artistic swimming (known as synchronised swimming until 2017) has been an event at the Summer Olympics since the 1984 Games. The current Olympic program consists of a ''Women's Duet'' event and a ''Mixed Team'' event. In the Women's Duet, pairs complete two routines, the Duet Technical routine and Duet Free routine, with medals awarded on cumulative scores. In the Mixed Team, teams of eight complete three routines, the Team Technical, Team Free, and Team Acrobatic, with medals awarded on cumulative scores. Male athletes were permitted to enter this event from Paris 2024, however no male athletes have yet competed in this event. Career Cameron began synchronized swimming at age 13, and she joined the Calgary Aquabelles in 1976. In 1985 she was paired with swimming partner Carolyn Waldo. The pair found great success, winning most major duet competitions including the 1985 Rome and Spanish Opens, 1986 Commonwealth Games, 1986 World Aquatics Championships and the 1987 Pan Pacific Championships. is a Japanese former synchronized swimmer who competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics, where she gained a bronze medal each for the solo and duet events, and the 1992 Summer Olympics. She was the first woman to be Japan's flag-bearer for the 1988 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony. Retirement Since retiring, Mikako Kotani has opened a synchronized swimming school and served on the JOC (Japanese Olympic Committee), IOC Athletes' Commission, and Association of National Olympic Committees.
