''Spraycan Art'' is the first book that documented the initial stages of the worldwide spread of New York City Subway graffiti style and subculture. Authored by Henry Chalfant and James Prigoff and published by Thames & Hudson on September 1, 1987. The photographs are primarily of walls rather than subway cars, and features the work of Mode 2 and The Chrome Angelz, 3D (Robert Del Naja), Goldie, Bando Bando (, ) is a defensive unarmed martial art from Myanmar. Henry Chalfant
Henry Chalfant (born January 2, 1940) is an American photographer and videographer most notable for his work on graffiti, breakdance, and hip hop culture. One of Chalfant's prints is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Education and career Chalfant is a graduate of Stanford University, where he majored in classical Greek. Starting out as a sculptor in New York City in the 1970s, Chalfant turned to photography and film to do an in-depth study of hip-hop culture and graffiti art. One of the foremost authorities on New York subway art, and other aspects of urban youth culture, his photographs record hundreds of ephemeral, original art works that have long since vanished. Seen (artist)
Richard Mirando, known as Seen, is an American graffiti artist. He is one of the best known graffiti artists in the world and has been referred to as the Godfather of Graffiti. Seen first started to paint on the New York City Subway system in 1973. He was born in the Bronx, New York City. Life For the next 16 years he painted pieces across the city and on all subway routes, but they were especially prominent on the 2, 5, and 6 trains. He was responsible for dozens of whole-car top-to-bottoms, many of which have become iconic images of the time. During the very early 1980s he started producing work on canvas, shown by galleries and bought by museums and private collectors. Graffiti in New York City has had a substantial local, national, and international influence. Growth of graffiti culture in New York Graffiti began appearing around New York City with the words "Bird Lives" but after that, it took about a decade and a half for graffiti to become noticeable in NYC. So, around 1970 or 1971, TAKI 183 and Tracy 168 started to gain notoriety for their frequent vandalism. Martha Cooper
Martha Cooper is an American photojournalist. She worked as a staff photographer for the ''New York Post'' during the 1970s. She is best known for documenting the New York City graffiti scene of the 1970s and 1980s. In 1984, Cooper and Henry Chalfant published their photographs of New York City graffiti in the book '' Subway Art,'' which has been called the graffiti bible and, by 2009, had sold half a million copies. Life and work Cooper picked up photography at the age of three. She graduated from high school at the age of 16, earned an art degree at age 19 from Grinnell College. She taught English as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand, journeyed by motorcycle from Bangkok to London and received an anthropology diploma from the University of Oxford. Subway Art
''Subway Art'' is a collaborative book by Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant, which documents the early history of the New York City graffiti movement. Originally published in 1984, the book has been described as a "landmark photographic history". Development Two photographers in New York City had been separately documenting the artwork seen on the subway cars for 10 years, through the 1970s and into the 1980s. Each planned to put out a book and neither could find a publisher. They agreed to work together on one book to increase the chance of finding a publisher. They did not find one in the US mainly because graffiti was viewed as vandalism, not as art. Removal of graffiti was a problem for public agencies. Stephen Powers
Stephen Powers (1840–1904) was an American journalist, ethnographer, and historian of Native American tribes in California. He traveled extensively to study and learn about their cultures, and wrote notable accounts of them. His articles were first published over a series of years in the ''Overland Monthly'' journal, but collected in ''The Tribes of California'' (1877) published by the US Geological Survey. Early years Stephen Powers was born in Waterford, Ohio. He attended and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1863. During the American Civil War years, Powers served as a Union Army correspondent for the ''Cincinnati Commercial'' newspaper. In 1869 Powers left Ohio for the West. Stash (graffiti Artist)
Josh Franklin (born 1967), known as Stash, is an American graffiti artist and graphic designer based in Brooklyn, New York. Biography Franklin was born in Long Island, New York in 1967. He grew up in New York City, finding inspiration from a young age looking at illegal Graffiti art on the sides of the city's subway trains while on his way to school. Later in the early 1980s, Stash started painting trains alongside other artists such as Futura and ZEPHYR. He exhibited at age 17 with pop artists Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and later continued on as a successful gallery artist. He got the name Stash from the colloquial term "stashing", which equates to hiding things. Growing up in a very small home, Franklin felt the need to hide, or "stash" his most valued belongings from his brother. Tracy 168
Michael Christopher Tracy (February 14, 1958 – September 3, 2023), known as Tracy 168, was an American graffiti artist. He pioneered the art form known as wildstyle. Tracy 168 came to be known as one of the most influential graffiti and street artists of all time, as variations of wildstyle writing spread around the world. He is acknowledged to have been a seminal figure in the development of street art. James Prigoff
James Prigoff (October 29, 1927 – April 21, 2021) was an American photographer, author, and lecturer focusing on public murals, graffiti, and spraycan art. He has traveled extensively throughout the world documenting these art forms. Early life Prigoff was born in New York City and graduated high school in 1944 at age 16. He was an Honorable Mention Westinghouse Science Talent Search Winner and was accepted at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was an honor student all eight terms and an outstanding athlete in track and field. He received a "STRAIGHT T", the school's highest athletic award. Graduating MIT in 1947, Prigoff moved into the business world and also took up squash, achieving many National rankings. He was National Champion of Squash Tennis seven times in the 1960s. Kaves
Michael McLeer, better known as Kaves, is an American fine art painter, graffiti artist, illustrator, director, actor, author, rapper, and entrepreneur. From Brooklyn, New York, Kaves started doing graffitis in the 1980s. Part of the early 1980s train car movement, his talent got noticed, and appeared in Henry Chalfant's book ''Spraycan Art'' (1987). Shortly after, with his brother, they created the hip-hop group Lordz of Brooklyn. They had four releases ''All in the Family'' (1995), ''Graffiti Roc'' (2003),''The Brooklyn Way'' (2006), and ''Family Reunion'' (2020).
